2008 Mindfulness -Based Stress Reduction Courses/Workshops

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR):
The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program (or MBSR) is an 8-week program originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph. D., at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. The program incorporates mindfulness meditation and yoga, to help train people to cope better with the stress in their lives. The program has been highly successful in helping people make positive life changes. By teaching people to see the importance of being mindful in the present moment, they can respond differently to stress. This prevents stress from ultimately controlling them.

The 8-Week Program:
The course is run in a group format, which meets once per week for 8 consecutive weeks. At the end of the 8 weeks, the group meets for an additional session (a Saturday or a Sunday), which is held as a silent 'day of mindfulness' followed by a concluding discussion. The weekly meetings run about 2 hours in length. During the 8 weeks, participants are required to practice certain techniques learned in the class, at home (for example, yoga and meditation).
The classes are run as an informal group discussion, along with instruction in, and practice of, mindfulness meditation and yoga. However, the program is quite structured, and a course work book is also used.
It is not required, but it is highly recommended, that group members purchase a copy of Jon Kabat-Zinn's book: Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, & Illness (ISBN-13 Number: 978-0385303125).
